Hot Water Heaters
One of the most important plumbing fixtures in any home plumbing system is the water heater. It's in charge of making sure you get to have a hot shower after a long day, getting the laundry nice and clean, and helping you wash the dishes. A broken water heater can be one of the most frustrating and, sometimes, most expensive parts of the plumbing system to fix. Our plumbing experts see it every day.

That's why its good to know that Superior Plumbing & Gas Company has over 15 years of experience working on water heaters. We've worked with all brands, from State Water Heaters, Whirlpool, GE, American Standard, and more. Our plumbers have also worked with tankless water heaters and commercial water heaters. Repairing and installing water heaters in both Kansas and Missouri is our specialty, so you know you're getting the best plumbing service when it comes to hot water heaters.
Natural Gas, Propane, & Tankless!

Homeowners are increasingly weighing the benefits of tankless (on-demand) systems versus traditional (storage tank) water heaters. The main difference lies in how each delivers hot water. Tankless water heaters heat water only when needed, providing an endless supply without storing it. Traditional models, on the other hand, store hot water in a tank (typically 40–80 gallons), heating it continuously to keep it ready for use.
Tankless units are compact, wall-mounted, and ideal for smaller homes or properties where space is limited. However, the initial installation cost is higher and may require electrical or gas line upgrades. Tankless water heaters rely on a consistent water flow, and often require descaling 1-2 times each year due to the hard water in the midwest. Traditional water heaters are cheaper to install upfront and are often more than sufficient for households with moderate hot water needs.
Performance, Efficiency & Cost: Breaking It Down
When comparing performance and efficiency, tankless systems generally come out on top—delivering 20–35% greater energy efficiency over standard tank models, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Since they only operate when needed, tankless systems reduce energy waste, ultimately leading to lower utility bills. The repair costs for tankless models can be higher and may require specialized technicians. Choosing between them often means balancing upfront cost with long-term value and ongoing utility savings.
If you’re looking for a cost-effective, straightforward solution—especially for short-term stays, rentals, or properties with moderate demand—a traditional water heater still holds value. Installation is quicker and cheaper, and repairs are more universally available. It’s also ideal if your home’s existing setup isn’t equipped to support a tankless system without significant modifications.
Tankless Pros/Cons
PROS: Endless hot water, space saver, energy sufficient
CONS: High up-front cost, higher repair costs, high maintenance.
Tank Water Heater Pros/Cons
PROS: Lower initial costs, simple install
CONS: Limited hot water, less sufficient, takes up more space.
Expansion Tanks
The expansion tank is designed to handle the thermal expansion of water as it heats up in the water heater, preventing excessive water pressure. If water pressure gets to high it can damage valves in plumbing fixtures, joints in supply pipes and the water heater itself.
Expansion tanks often fail, the rubber diaphragm often will wear out. Expansion tanks are also known for developing pinhole leaks in the rubber bladder, and tanks can also become coated in condensation if there’s too much water in the tank, for instance.
If you have an expansion tank that is no longer working, you may be in the need of a replacement. Call us if you need an expansion tank, our Missouri and Kansas plumbers will get you all set up!
